Builtin names like len are just entries at the bottom of the LEGB search and can be shadowed by an ordinary assignment. After len = 5, the name len refers to the integer 5, so len("ab") tries to call an int and raises TypeError: 'int' object is not callable. The original builtin is hidden, not removed.
