dict.setdefault inserts the default only if the key is missing; otherwise it returns the existing value and discards the supplied default. The first call stores and returns the list; the second finds 'k' present and returns that same list (the fresh [] is thrown away). So a and b alias one list, and appending through a is seen through b.
